At the Integrative Center for Wellness, we want our patients to be informed members of the decision making process. It is important to us that our patients understand the intentions of various treatment practices and feel knowledgeable while taking steps towards securing optimal head-to-toe health. We believe that comprehension leads to comfort and that comfort leads to positive results.

This page is meant to be a resource for understanding the detailed intricacies and science behind the most popular and effective personal wellness treatments utilized at the Center.

Body Composition

The “B.C.” allows doctors a more thorough reading of the body’s physique than a simple weight measurement. Knowing the exact bodily percentages of fat, muscle and water make it easier to pinpoint diets and exercises that will result in the maximum contribution to sustained weight loss and personal wellness.

The Center tests the B.C. by sending an electrical current (similar to an EKG test) through the body fluids contained mainly in  lean and fat tissue. This method is called “bioelectrical impedance analysis” and it measures the opposition to the flow of the current. Impedance is low in lean tissue, where intracellular and extracellular fluid and electrolytes are primarily contained, but high in fat tissue.

Dr. Ahmad has chosen the QuadScan 4000 from Bodystat to conduct the “BIA” for its quick, economical and minimally-invasive testing procedure. The data from the test is instantly downloaded directly from the machine to a computer using Bluetooth technology. It provides an easily-digestible two-page summary along with three specific reports: a trend report enables patients to track changes in blood pressure, cholesterol, waist to hip, heart rate and lung function; a weight and activity manager automatically determines the number of weeks needed to achieve a certain weight goal; and a cardiac risk analysis takes lifestyle factors, family history and measurables such as blood pressure into its assessment and displays the positive effects of potential lifestyle changes (e.g. if a patient agrees to reduce their smoking by five cigarettes a day, the expected impact on their cardiac risk can be seen instantaneously on the computer screen). These measurements highlight subtle yet significant health improvements that stepping on a scale will not initially pick up. The patient will see from day one that their weight-loss efforts are objectively worthwhile, providing them with excellent motivation to continue down the path to full-body personal wellness.

Optifast is a meal replacement plan that helps patients on average lose 52 pounds over a 26 week period. Health benefits also include an 11% average decrease in blood pressure and a 14% average decrease in cholesterol. Follow-up studies show 78% of men and 60% of women maintained their medically significant weight loss.

The program provides an array of shakes, soups and bars that are designed by medical professionals to satisfy food cravings and, most importantly, 100% of the recommended amounts of quality protein, minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids.

Optifast typically consists of three stages: the active weight loss phase, the transition phase and the long-term weight management phase. During the 12-week active weight loss phase, patients eat from a full meal replacement menu and receive weekly medical monitoring from Dr. Ahmad. In the 6-week transition phase, patients begin to eat regular foods in addition to the Optifast replacements. The long-term weight management phase provides ongoing support from Dr. Ahmad and patients go back to eating mostly regular food with occasional meal replacements if desired.

Metagenics FirstLine Therapy is a 12 week disease reduction program aimed at lowering the risk of diabetes and heart conditions. FirstLine may be the perfect fit for accomplishing your personal wellness goals if you have three of the following five markers: 1) elevated waist circumference, 2) elevated triglycerides, 3) reduced “good” cholesterol, 4) elevated blood pressure and 5) elevated fasting glucose.

Scientific experts at the Jeffrey S. Bland Science Center have used the latest genomic and proteomic technologies to identify plant-based derivatives and nutrients which positively influence health in uniquely and predictably safe ways.

Metagenics uses these discoveries as the foundation for the nutritional supplement aspect of FirstLine. UltraMeal is the line of medical food using only natural ingredients that FirstLine has developed to support the management of obesity, cardiovascular health, insulin resistance and altered body composition. Its low glycemic index ensures proper blood sugar levels, the high fiber content supports gastrointestinal health and the 600 mg per serving of dairy-free calcium plays a significant role in reducing the rate of bone loss and protecting bone strength.

The educational portion of FirstLine teaches how to shop for and prepare healthy, nutritious foods that satisfy (but not increase) your cravings and how to exercise in a way that gets rid of unwanted fat and replaces it with muscle.
